Free Profiles on Private Companies

June 21st, 2009 by Jim Swift

In the rapidly rising sea of information, someone got left at the dock.  It’s easy to find information on public companies.  Just go to Yahoo! Finance or do a Google search.  But go ahead and try to find information on private companies – especially the millions of smaller ones that we all interact with every day.  The limited information available about them is scattered across a multitude of hard-to-find sources and largely unstructured.

The landscape is changing.  This weekend, Cortera launched a new source of free information on small and medium sized privately held businesses (as well as large and public ones).  Cortera business profiles help businesses more easily find companies who can deliver what they need, gain insight into the stability and credibility of their existing trading partners, and identify new customers in need of their products.  Containing detailed information on business size, industry, real-world trade payment history, recent news and more, the business profiles enable companies to grow their businesses and manage risk.

Our initial launch is concentrated on the world of suppliers.  Cortera’s business profiles are designed for both suppliers and the companies that buy from them.  For buyers, Cortera profiles improve their ability to find suppliers and evaluate their health to avoid supply chain disruptions.  For suppliers, Cortera profiles assist in finding potential buyers and assessing both their capacity to spend and ability to pay.

There are millions of daily interactions between buyers and suppliers that are begging for better intelligence.  Our objective is to provide a new level of insight into private companies to support these interactions at either free or near-free price points.

We believe that greater transparency into businesses will lead to smarter commerce between them.

  3. I do want to congratulate your company on an idea that will help businesses run their manufacturing, sales and help dictate their budgets for 2010 and so on. My hat goes off to you, but unfortunately my family owns three different companies in your database which have no accurate information in regards to the Industry Catagories, to the sales range, employees and contact information. I stumbled on your site seeing the possibilities you guys have at your fingertips…someone needs to better follow up with each corporation listed and have up to date current information if you are offering a service based on factual logistics that may harm a company’s reputation when your ever so trusting customers look to you for current events each day…that in itself is a full time job with constant follow up.

  4. The website had a slight issue, so I am not quite sure if my last words of advice will make their way back to the right person that truly cares about this business, and fulfilling duties to better your clients reputation as well as corporations depending on you to document current up-to-date information from A to Z. My family owns three different business you have write ups on that are written under false pretenses; each profile is lacking correct information on Industry Type, number of employees per location, services each company provides, contact information and even sales per year.

Before I researched our companies I found myself wanting to really contribute to this concept… you inspired me with a huge project to follow up with all your companies listed…but my excitement quickly came to a screeching holt whan I read 100% of the information listed on our three companies. Makes me wonder if it’s simply not a ploy to reach out to these owners and have them come to you. Cortera could be so beneficial to this entire country’s financial status. You need someone building solid rapports with your existing customers to ensure accurate data.

Just a word of advice. I do believe in your company…you could help pave the way to building our economy and weeding out the weak ones that harm us all.
